Find creativity, community & support for your wildest work.

If you are a photographer or filmmaker with a passion for wilderness conservation and science communication, you're in the right place.

A Membership Community Built for You

Let me guess…

You are driven to make a difference in this world using your photography or filmmaking skills. But the path isn't clear.

You feel like you're on the outside looking in. Isolation, self-doubt, and uncertainty weigh on you. You struggle to find like-minded peers to lean on. You don't have connections to experts for advice. You're not sure how to find a mentor for guidance. You fear never making progress, and you're constantly asking yourself, “Am I doing this right?”

This is the roller-coaster every creative feels, no matter if you're a hobbyist, side-hustler or professional.

But it’s made even more raw within our niche of conservation visual storytelling. The work is often complex, controversial, confusing.

You don't have to go it alone.

If you’re a photographer or filmmaker with a passion for conservation and science communication, and you're looking to:

    • level up on your skills
    • gain a bigger reach for your work
    • make a bigger impact for the issues you care about
    • connect with fellow creatives

(all while staying sane navigating all the moving parts of being a creative)

…then you likely already know that you need access to a community of peers who fully understand the challenges of this work, and share your values and big-picture goals.

You also already know that you need a collection of educational resources built specifically for you and your unique work in a unique field.

Here’s what you might not know

Having one single place you can go to find ideas, answers, training and community is about more than convenience. It can:

Dramatically speed up your progress on projects by easily finding opportunities, or troubleshooting quickly through problems with peers.

Save you hours of time and headache looking for answers to complex questions specific to the niche of conservation visual storytelling, from ethics to business.

Build up your skills in all areas of your work, from creative storytelling to technical skills to business savvy.

Open up surprising new paths for your work through connections with peers and collaborators across disciplines and creative mediums, and spark fresh ideas you’d never come up with working solo.

The very nature of our conservation storytelling work means we often find ourselves working alone, or in creatively isolating situations. It's all too easy to feel unsure of the next best step in a story, a project, or in your business as a professional. Worst of all, it's easy to run low on creativity, compassion, optimism or patience.

What Members Say

– Christine Paige, science writer and amateur photographer

“Wild Idea Lab is helping to build my confidence in getting out there and making connections to do a project.”

Wild Idea Lab has broken things wide open for me. As a freelancer in a small town, I’ve felt very isolated. Most nature photographers near me aren’t interested in applying their skills to conservation and getting people inspired about what’s going on in nature. I wanted to be part of a community that is passionate about doing more with their images.

I was uncertain about biting the bullet and spending the money to join, but I made the plunge and found this wonderful tribe of like-minded people who are passionate about wildlife, who want to tell stories of conservation, and who understand how storytelling can inspire and motivate people and communities.

There are all these skills to learn and Jaymi has organized it so well. I’m gaining so many tools to figure out this business. Whether I become a true professional at it or continue as a semi-pro doesn't matter, because I can use these tools to organize my work, my projects, my stories.

Wild Idea Lab is helping to build my confidence in getting out there and making connections to do a project. From the masterclasses to the expertise of the other members, to everyone being supportive and helping one another… it is like this rolling carnival of fun and inspiring people.

Wild Idea Lab has created a community of creatives who are learning together, mentoring one another, and cheering each other on – there are no silly questions inside Wild Idea Lab. I’m gaining a lot and assembling a toolkit that gives me a tremendous amount of confidence.

I’ve absolutely gotten my value back from my investment in the membership. Being part of Wild Idea Lab is a thrill.

– Josh Asel, professional wildlife conservation photographer

“The highly-detailed “Masterclass” series alone has elevated my entire game, leading me to getting paid immediately and more often.”

Wild Idea Lab is a God-send for me. I've been photographing wildlife since 2012 and I quickly transitioned into a Wildlife Conservation Photojournalist, covering many different stories, but what I've been missing is exactly how to turn my passion into a business.

Even in photography colleges where they teach you how to both expand and focus your creative horizons, they amazingly don't teach you how to run a business, which is essential to all working artists.

WIL has bridged that gap for me. The highly-detailed “Masterclass” series alone has elevated my entire game, leading me to getting paid immediately and more often.

And more than classes, it's an open, friendly online environment where a membership also becomes a ticket to unprecedented shared information between experts and amateurs alike. Friendships and business relationships are easily formed through a flawless networking platform and have already led me to multiple partnerships for exciting projects.

I couldn't be happier about how WIL has advanced my career as an artist, storyteller, and businessman. WIL is a miraculous stroke of genius from its creator Jaymi Heimbuch.

“I’ve even been recommended for an assignment thanks to connections made in the Lab, so the membership has already paid for itself.”

I am a wildlife biologist and conservation photographer, originally from Brazil and now living in California, USA. As I was starting my career as a conservation photographer, I was struggling to know if I was heading in the right direction.

Based on the content that I previously had from Jaymi I knew joining Wild Idea Lab would be extremely helpful for my development as a conservation photographer.

I was very excited to be part of a community of like-minded people. Being self-employed, I felt that I wanted to be able to share experiences, successes and struggles with other conservation photographers. I really like the coffee and happy hours for the opportunity to get to know more people in a relaxed environment. I feel I learn a lot from these sessions and it is a very unique opportunity that I would not have if I wasn't part of WIL.

I have started to look at my work with different eyes, and am already thinking of my next projects and photo shoots in a way that has increased my chances of having them published. I’ve even been recommended for an assignment thanks to connections made in the Lab, so the membership has already paid for itself.

“Since finding Wild Idea Lab, I've not only discovered this community that I can interact with, but it has also set off all of these ideas in my brain, all of these new directions that I want to go as a photographer.”

I live in a remote area near the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. There are lots and lots of nature photographers here, but there aren't many conservation photographers… and there's such a difference there. I had joined a couple of other photography groups online and I was feeling very frustrated because the questions I had and the things that I wanted to talk about were not what the groups were talking about. They were talking much more about the technical aspects but I was really looking more for a conservation-minded community. I was feeling like I was stalled. Like I just didn't know where to go.

Since finding Wild Idea Lab, I've not only discovered this community that I can interact with, but it has also set off all of these ideas in my brain, all of these new directions that I want to go as a photographer. It’s not like I’m now divided or unfocused with all these new ideas. In fact, just the opposite. I feel like I'm way more focused than I was before and I have many more roads to travel to get where I want to go. I'm working on the building blocks and I now have a foundation and a direction. I’m now thinking about what it is I'm trying to achieve and how am I going to get there.

The Lab has helped me so much to change my thinking and transition from taking photos that are great to hang in a gallery and sell to tourists, and instead capture storytelling photos that mean something. It’s been wonderful to have like-minded people to help me think more about the story and how I get that story across. When you have an idea, you can discuss it with the community without being worried that someone's going to steal your idea and run with it because in Wild Idea Lab it’s very clear that we don’t do that. Everyone has really respected the boundaries that each person's story is their story. So having that sounding board, being able to ask people, “What do you think about this? Should I change this? Do you think this is the right direction?” and hearing back all different points of view truly helps me to develop clear ideas of where I'm trying to go.

The masterclasses, too, are just invaluable. Some of them have really been like a light bulb going off and I’m saying, “Wow, that is exactly the information I needed!” I started a podcast — I never, ever would have considered doing a podcast if it wasn't for the masterclass on audio. And I’m having so much fun with that!

Having experts come in on a regular basis is absolutely amazing. I love that I don't have to be on every single call or every single zoom meeting. I can go back later to watch the recordings and still get that information and review things. There's just so much information available, and so many people available that will answer a question. If you ask a question on Wild Idea Lab, you're going to have an answer. People are really quick to respond and to help you out. It's just really a positive experience.

The Lab has been invaluable to me. The small amount of money that I pay to be part of this membership is being repaid many times over.

“Being a member of the Wild Idea Lab has been a wonderful way for me to connect with the broader conservation community.”

One of the many challenges of being a conservation photographer and storyteller is running your creative business at the same time.

I recently got my email newsletter off the ground after taking Wild Idea Lab’s Masterclass titled “Create A Powerful Email List”. Since finishing my list, I’ve seen an increase in my website traffic, email sign-ups, personal replies, and social media engagement. I’m looking forward to taking more of Wild Idea Lab’s Masterclasses in the future!

Wild Idea Lab does a great job of breaking down topics into achievable chunks and being very responsive to the community members. In Wild Idea Lab, there’s a great network of supportive members, as well as a plethora of critical thinking topics being discussed at any given moment.

Being a member of the Wild Idea Lab has been a wonderful way for me to connect with the broader conservation community. I’ve learned a lot from the entire community so far, and have enjoyed the camaraderie of the monthly social video calls.

“Now, I don't just think about what I'd like to do – I'm actually working every day toward my goals.”

I am a former attorney, and have a passionate ambition to become a professional conservation photographer. But since this is such a new direction for me, I was feeling lost and unsure I had a path forward.

I’ve learned that one of the most important elements in living a creative life is having a community. Wild Idea Lab is a place where I can be a part of that community, no matter where I am. It's an opportunity to share expertise, learn from colleagues and hear from editors. It has completely enriched my creativity and sense of purpose.

Now, I don't just think about what I'd like to do – I'm actually working every day toward my goals.

“I've already gotten a photography gig thanks to networking in Wild Idea Lab. There's enough content in the Lab that if you are committed and put it to work, it will pay for your membership.”

After leaving photography school, I felt like I’d lost a sense of community. I didn't know anybody else who was doing the same kind of work and didn't really have any kind of community that I could go to talk about it, whether it's technical stuff, business stuff, or just the life stuff that comes up with working in this industry. It's hard to talk to people that don't work in conservation about conservation.

I just didn't know where to find the community at all, and I’d looked everywhere. Wild Idea Lab is the only thing out there that is filling this massive hole for conservation photographers and filmmakers. When I found it, I had zero hesitation, I was like, “Yes! Take my money!”

By joining Wild Idea Lab, I now have that community. I have people to turn to if I have questions, or want to bounce ideas around, or just talk about business. I like to talk through something – it gives me clarity that I didn't know I had inside me.

I've become more accountable for the goals that I set for myself, thanks to being in the mastermind group. But just being part of the community in general keeps me more focused. I have more incentive to stay on track and not to put things off, which has been especially helpful through the upheaval of COVID. From a networking standpoint, I think it's really valuable to meet other people that are working in the same industry as you.

In fact, I've already gotten a photography gig thanks to networking in Wild Idea Lab. There's enough content in the Lab that if you are committed and put it to work, it will pay for your membership.

– Dan Kossman, amateur conservation photographer

“The Lab has provided me with ideas and instruction on how to expand my contribution to these organizations. And, I’m just starting to scratch the surface!”

I love nature and photography, but I really wanted to do more with that passion to advance nature conservancy. Before Wild Idea Lab, I had no idea how to do that.

The Lab has given me something to really focus on, and to guide me as I develop into a conservation creative. I’m incredibly impressed with the amount of content that Wild Idea Lab provides. I’ve gotten a ton of ideas and inspiration out of it. One of my favorite things to do every morning is to log on and see what people are posting, what new opportunities there are, what new events are scheduled. I really love it.

I’m not as focused on using these skills to publish my work or get an assignment as much as I am using my skills to promote conservancy. For instance, the masterclass that teaches us how to do a calendar fundraiser as a tool to support and promote a conservation organization is perfect. Now I’m doing that with one of the organizations I’m working with. And I’m helping another organization with building a website, branding promotion, launching an email list… All things I wouldn’t have thought about before Wild Idea Lab.

The Lab has provided me with ideas and instruction on how to expand my contribution to these organizations. And, I’m just starting to scratch the surface!

– Sara Stein, semi-professional conservation photographer

“Even though I'm not focused on becoming a full time photographer yet, being in a community of people I can talk and network with and being surrounded by their work…there’s just no other opportunity out there like Wild Idea Lab.”

Asking questions on Wild Idea Lab is the reason I managed to get my online print store up and running.

I tried to launch my store a year and a half ago and got completely flustered by everything I had to do to get that kind of thing launched, so I just gave up. When I joined Wild Idea Lab, I figured it was a good place to start asking these questions because a lot of members have stores and knew how it worked.

Having a place to ask questions and being guaranteed to get answers is so much better than googling and hoping you find the right information.

What makes Wild Idea Lab so powerful is the connections you make with people. It can be easy to feel isolated, but with Wild Idea Lab it's easier to connect with a community that wants to help you succeed.

Even though I'm not focused on becoming a full time photographer yet, being in a community of people I can talk and network with and being surrounded by their work…there’s no other opportunity out there like Wild Idea Lab.

“I have a plan now of how I want to move forward with my work… Wild Idea Lab is great at keeping me motivated.”

Before I joined, I don't think I had a fully developed idea of what being a conservation photographer was. And if I did, I think it was misinformed. But I knew deeply and desperately that's what I wanted to do. I definitely didn't know anybody else who's interested in doing this. I would read National Geographic and I knew I wanted to help through my photography. I had donated photography to volunteer coordinators for outreach, but I didn't know exactly what it meant to do conservation photography work. So I was looking for whatever I could find to try and make things more clear for me and understand my path.

I think more than anything, I just was really hungry for knowledge and Wild Idea Lab is the only thing that fulfills the need for knowledge and community around conservation photography. The business mastermind is fantastic. I feel like I'm making friends and collaborating with people who are at the same place I'm at. The bonus live events with speakers are fantastic.

And then there’s the positivity. One thing I really love about Wild Idea Lab is that Jaymi has built this community where we're not competing with each other. This isn't about who's better than who. This is about working together and celebrating wins. That means a lot to me.

I know that there's been a lot of ways I’ve grown in the months I’ve been a member. I have a plan now of how I want to move forward with my work. I understand the questions I need to answer now in order to make moves. I really feel like there's a good mindset foundation. Wild Idea Lab is great at keeping me motivated.

Everyone's in a different part of their journey, and having a place where you can meet other people and ask questions is a pretty big deal. I've learned way more from Wild Idea Lab than I could in any of those expensive photography programs. When I joined, I had just lost my job, so investing the money worried me. But it was so worth that money. You can always go out and find those photography tips. But you're not going to find anywhere else like Wild Idea Lab on the web.

“I have enjoyed and learned so much from my membership – and I am already seeing results.”

When I switched my focus from general photography to working as a Conservation Photographer, my initial challenge was to build a portfolio of images, stories, and published work to attract conservation focused organizations.

When I discovered Wild Idea Lab as a resource, it was right at the onset of COVID-19. I worried about the expense of joining, but am so glad it was only a brief hesitation. The effort Jaymi puts in to support individual members and make Wild Idea Lab a successful community far exceeds the cost.

The bonus content with guest speakers providing industry information, the Mastermind group that provides consistent communication within a cohort, and the masterclasses with relevant and immediately useful information are all wonderful. I have enjoyed and learned so much from my membership – and I am already seeing results.

Thanks to training gained in Wild Idea Lab, I engaged with an organization whose work I wanted to contribute to and partnered with them to create a calendar fundraiser. This partnership led to a gallery exhibition to be scheduled to feature some of the work from the calendar and the opportunity to reach a broader audience. Overall, I have seen an 80% improvement in response rate when reaching out to people and organizations I’d like to work with.

Now that I have a network to bounce ideas off, and get feedback and garner inspiration from, I have a more clear idea of what my photography business is, and what drives my work.

No one should be doing this work in a vacuum. A community lifts me up and helps me to see around bends in the road I could not possibly see on my own.

“WIL operates on sharing knowledge and growing together, no matter what experience level you are at, and that has helped my confidence as a wildlife conservation photographer.”

I'd been learning about wildlife photography in a bubble. It was frustrating not knowing how to shape my work into a career or make a difference with it when starting from ground zero. I have an endless passion for this art form but lacked the connections to move forward.

Not having any type of roadmap or idea how to get to the next level meant I wasn’t going anywhere. I'd worked really hard at the craft and putting in the time, but didn't want to stay ‘stuck' in the same place.

Now I have made new friends and am able to get guidance in a safe, confidential community when needed. It has been amazing to meet people from all around the world with so many different experience levels. It's great to know I am not alone and to have access to the ‘hive mind.'

WIL operates on sharing knowledge and growing together – no matter what experience level you are at – and that has helped my confidence as a wildlife conservation photographer, especially since we all celebrate each other's successes.

Money is a hesitation anytime I invest in myself, especially since I am not making steady income (yet) at this venture. I was also scared to be vulnerable with the community at first and share confidential information. But, it has absolutely been worth the investment, and I have watched myself grow.

There have been guest Q&As which have been invaluable. I really love the group coaching and coffee hour sessions. It’s great to post questions and get answers. I also love making new friends! Anyone serious about getting to the next level of wildlife conservation photography has nothing to lose by joining Wild Idea Lab.

When monthly masterclasses are rolled out, they’re there for good. You can participate at any time that fits into your schedule.

And weekly emails ensure you’re seeing the best of what’s happening and never miss a beat.

Is this right for me if I’m not a full-time pro?

If you are serious about putting your visual storytelling talents toward conservation and science communication, then YES! This is a fit for you.

Our members are of all experience levels, and many are pursuing this as a hobby or a side-hustle. It doesn’t matter if you never even plan to go pro. Wild Idea Lab is all about building up creative skills, boosting your reach and impact, and helping you make a big difference in conservation.

And, if you want to learn how to make some money at it, well that’s most certainly built into the resources too!

Is this right for me if I’m a highly experienced full-time pro?

Oh my goodness, yes! Wild Idea Lab’s resources include high level conversation about creative strategy, marketing your projects, systems to streamline your business and boost income, and networking with people who can help move your career forward – whether that’s through conversations with editors, or collaborating with other members, or however it might play out.

We don’t shy away from the tough topics. Indeed, we’re all about making conservation visual storytelling a viable, sustainable, and respected full-time profession.

Our members who are established long-time professionals have found immense value and ways to grow their existing businesses.

Who exactly is behind Wild Idea Lab?

Why, I’m honored you ask! I’m Jaymi Heimbuch, a full-time professional wildlife conservation photographer, instructor and coach. I made a dream come true when I launched my conservation photography workshops that teach talented photographers how to create a story from start to pitch. The response was HUGE. My first workshop sold out in just six hours! After running several of them and seeing the amazing energy and success of students, I knew it was time to do more.

I want to ensure that the learning, the implementation, the momentum doesn’t end when someone goes home after a workshop. And that it doesn’t rely on even attending a workshop in the first place!

There are so many people out there like you who need resources, tools, community to do BIG things with their work. And thus, Wild Idea Lab was born.

It is an all-inclusive community where all of us working on conservation visual storytelling come together and connect. We leave status at the door and focus on sharing our experiences and stories to learn from one another. We are a hub for education and networking so we can grow both as individuals and as a powerful group of conservation advocates.

I may be a wildlife conservation photographer, but I am also obsessed with planning and organizational strategies, marketing and business systems. I put all that to work for you inside of Wild Idea Lab. I love helping conservation creatives like you move forward as movers and shakers making this planet a healthier place for us all to live.

Who teaches the masterclasses?

Experts! Wild Idea Lab masterclasses are always rich, in-depth content and that means pulling in instructors who are experts on that topic.

We have everyone from award-winning filmmakers to lawyers, to sound technicians, to digital anthropologists (it’s a thing!) teaching masterclasses so that you get the best of the best in educational content.

I’m very careful about my budget. Is this worth the investment?

You are worth it. That’s a fact.

Investing in yourself is the number one smartest thing you can do as a creative with big dreams. And investing a relatively small amount to accelerate your skills, connections and momentum as a visual storyteller is one of the most brilliant investments you can make.

In terms of value, the masterclasses, the mastermind groups, and the live events easily add up to an expense of $11,500 or more during the course of a year if you were to buy these a la carte. Signing up for masterclasses alone could run you upward of $1,200 a year.

But you get access to all of it for an annual membership of just $399.99.

That's about $1.09 per day… all for daily access to community, coaching, and continuing education focused on conservation visual storytelling.

In other words, putting down a single annual payment might feel like a big investment at first glance. But for a little over a dollar a day, you are gaining an extraordinary amount of support.

As one member, Michelle puts it: “I've already gotten a photography gig thanks to networking in Wild Idea Lab. There's enough content in the Lab that if you are committed and put it to work, it will pay for your membership.”

Or as Heather puts it, “I've learned way more from Wild Idea Lab than I could in any of those expensive photography programs. When I joined, I had just lost my job, so investing the money worried me. But it was so worth that money. You can always go out and find those photography tips. But you're not going to find anywhere else like Wild Idea Lab on the web.”

Or as John puts it, “When I discovered Wild Idea Lab as a resource, it was right at the onset of COVID-19. I worried about the expense of joining, but am so glad it was only a brief hesitation. The effort Jaymi puts in to support individual members and make Wild Idea Lab a successful community far exceeds the cost.”

Or as Luciane puts it, “I have started to look at my work with different eyes, and am already thinking of my next projects and photo shoots in a way that has increased my chances of having them published. I’ve even been recommended for an assignment thanks to connections made in the Lab, so the membership has already paid for itself.”

Or as Christine puts it, “I’m gaining a lot and assembling a toolkit that gives me a tremendous amount of confidence. I’ve absolutely gotten my value back from my investment in the membership. Being part of Wild Idea Lab is a thrill.”

I know you get the point are are like, “Enough, enough already, Jaymi!” But just one more…

As Carla puts it, “Money is a hesitation anytime I invest in myself, especially since I am not making steady income (yet) at this venture. But, it has absolutely been worth the investment, and I have watched myself grow.  Anyone serious about getting to the next level of wildlife conservation photography has nothing to lose by joining Wild Idea Lab.”

This seems like such a great deal! Will my membership price change next year?

Such a smart question, and the answer is No.

I abide by a Price Predictability Promise: When you subscribe to Wild Idea Lab, your membership subscription rate is locked in. As long as you remain a member in good standing of Wild Idea Lab, the annual membership subscription rate at which you signed up will be the same year after year, regardless of any future price increases.

Your annual membership supports both you and your peers – from allowing us to provide focused community facilitation and regular masterclasses lead by top instructors, to reinvesting a portion of all proceeds back into the community through grants and scholarships.

If you do indeed choose to end your membership with Wild Idea Lab, please be aware that we do not offer refunds for cancelled memberships, and if you rejoin at a later date, you'll need to join at that future subscription rate.

But again, I have no doubt in my mind that you’re going to see right away that your membership is worth way more than the subscription price!

Ok, I'm totally ready! Can you remind me of what all I get when I join?
